THE GIRL

This is what happened to me and my friends in 2015 when we were on a road trip to an Island in Thailand.

April 11, 2015...

Last week, when I was on my phone checking my facebook’s notification, I saw a post about an island in Phuket, Thailand. This little isolated island seemed so beautiful to me, that I couldn’t take my mind off it. The beach covered with white sparkling sand, the turquoise-teal water, traditional longboats, and a swing between two palm trees on the beach attracted my heart. In the pictures, the water was so clear that you could see everything through it. It seemed like a good place for diving. There were snorkeling locations where we could expect to see a colorful array of marine life and rare aquatic creatures. I asked my friends to make a plan with me to go there on a coming holiday, and they all agreed after seeing my picture of those beautiful sights. I packed everything I needed. My backpack was full of swimsuits. I planned to take as many pictures as I could.

April 18 …

We left the town at 2 pm on Monday. It took us about seven to eight hours to get there, and I couldn’t wait to enjoy my holidays. We rented a van. With my friends, things never get boring. We’re all funny and playful, no wonder we’ve been friends for so long. We sang, we danced, we played games and chatted along the way. The van was shaking as we danced down the road. After a while, everyone got tired and took short naps. I felt as though I’d just closed my eyes for five minutes, but when I woke up again, it was already 6:45 pm. Everybody was hungry, so we stopped by a restaurant for dinner. I had a big dinner that night, I was very full, and felt sleepy again. While I was waiting for everyone to finish their meals, I closed my eyes and slept on a chair. Sully, who is my best friend, came to ask me to go to the bathroom with her because she is always scared to go alone. I looked around to find the bathroom sign, but I couldn't see one until I asked one waitress. She pointed to the doorways and told me to follow the sign. The sky was getting dark. I walked Sully to the bathroom with a question in my mind. I wonder why they didn’t build a bathroom inside as other restaurants do.

The bathroom was dirty, smelly, and a little bit scary. All I could hear were the birds’ cawing and our footsteps on the dead leaves. While she was inside, I checked my phone looking through pictures of the hotel that we had booked. Suddenly, I heard a girl’s voice laughing near me, but I couldn’t tell where it came from. First I thought the voice was from Sully’s phone because she was always on her phone, even in the bathroom. I knocked on the door twice and told her to hurry up. As we walked back to our group, I saw a girl who seemed to be about nine-ten years old wearing a white dress staring at me. She looked cute with her shoulder-length hair. I’d never seen her before, but her smile made me want to smile back at her. About 30 minutes later, We left the restaurant and continued on our way. When the car turned right, I looked across the way and saw the little girl again, her hand was waving goodbye to me and everybody in the car. This time, however, her hair was twice longer. The car’s headlight showed me that her dress looked dirty, strained with streaks of dark brown. I grabbed Sully’s shoulder and asked if she noticed that the girl’s hair was longer. Sully gave me a strange look.

   “ The girl!” I said.

   “What girl?” asked Sully.

“The girl at the corner that just waved goodbye to us. I saw you were looking at her, too”

“ A girl at the corner...?” she gave me a puzzled look.

   “ Yes!”

“ At the restaurant, right?” I nodded my head, “Umm hmm”

   She was silent.

“Answer me, SULLY!” I screamed at her.

   “Hold on, I'm thinking.”

“What are you thinking? Just answer my question. Did you see a little girl or not?”

Sully looked at me with the biggest eyes I have ever seen, then she looked out the back of the van.

“You say you just saw a girl, right?” she grabbed my shoulder.

“I'm getting annoyed with you. What did you see then?” I took a deep breath.

   “An old lady.”

   “What”

“Really old, older than your grandma.”

   “Hah???”

I thought maybe, we saw a different person. But suddenly I remember that we were looking at the same spot and I did not see anything besides a young girl and a few garbage bags. How could Sully see an old lady?

“Did she wave bye to you?”

“Umm, kinda.” “What do you mean kinda?”

“Both of her hands were holding a basket and a walking stick, but she did smile at me, that's why I smiled back at her.”

   “Well?”

   “Are we being haunted?”

   “Stop…” I screamed.

Everyone in the car was looking at us.

“I’m okay.” I pretended that I was playing with Sully.

I asked Kim who was sitting in front of us, if she saw anything at the restaurant’s corner. Nobody had seen anything besides a few garbage bags. We decide not to talk about it because we didn’t want to ruin our trip. Quickly, I grabbed the curtain on The van’s window and closed it. I didn't want to see anything outside, I tried to sleep, but whenever I closed my eyes, the picture of that girl was always in my mind.
