COMMITTEE ON THE SHELTERLESS
BY CHRIS MUSSER-KIRBY & VAUGHAN SHELDON

Serving at Committee on the Shelterless (COTS) has given us an opportunity to benefit the well-being of those in poverty. Our service project includes two aspects.

The first aspect is based on doing service in the COTS kitchen where we cook food and serve it to those who are in need. Our service work has prompted us to step out of our comfort zones by allowing us to work side by side in the kitchen with the people staying at COTS. From the countless hours we have put in, it has been very rewarding to meet new and interesting people; we have enjoyed connecting with them and hearing their stories. The experience we’ve had while doing service in the COTS kitchen has been a constant reminder that we shouldn’t take things for granted.

The second aspect of our project involves giving a presentation to a local business in Petaluma in an effort to fund an underfunded program at COTS known as Rent Right. Rent Right is a rental assistance program that teaches once impoverished people to become adequate renters. So far, we’ve put a great amount of time into crafting and perfecting our presentation. The presentation date is still to be determined but we are looking forward to it. Our experience at COTS has taught us many valuable lessons that we will never forget.
