NO MORE HEARTBREAK
BY CHRISTOPHER MUSSER-KIRBY
Tougher gun laws can help keep the public safe

“Hello Ma’am, I’m calling from school, I’m sorry to inform you that your daughter was shot and killed in a mass shooting today.” These are the last words that any parent would want to hear; that your child is dead because an angry or insane person that illegally owned a gun decided to lash out at others. It’s terrifying that, there is a possibility that the local police could call you repeating the exact words listed above: that your child is gone. There are gun incidents all over the U.S. which we hear about daily. Mostly because of people illegally owning guns, a person who is extremely mad got a hold of a gun, or someone with a mental disorder possess a gun and goes on a rampage. To stop these tragedies, gun laws should be very strict so there are less mass shootings and gun incidents in the U.S.

The United States should have the same harsh gun laws in all 50 states. If every state had the same laws regarding guns, there would be less gun crimes. There are states such as Arizona, the most pro-gun state, that practically hand out guns. Those guns can legally and illegally travel everywhere around the country, slipping past other state’s laws. It is shown in statistics, that states which are pro-gun have more gun related deaths. A list on gunsandammo.com lists the top five pro-gun states. The states on that list are Arizona, Vermont, Alaska, Utah and Kentucky. On ask.com there is a list of states with deaths by guns. Alaska and Arizona are number two and three, coming in at number one is Alabama, which is number seven on the list of most pro-gun states. It is unusual California is one of the most anti-gun states, yet it is number five on the list of most deaths by guns by state. The population of 37,691,912 makes up for the numbers compared to the other top 4 states having a lower population compared to California combined. California has more than 20 million people than the top 4 states populations combined.

Let’s face it, thugs don’t respect or care about gun laws, they ignore them. If the laws were made where someone was found illegally possessing a gun they would go to prison for a hefty amount of time, maybe they would think differently. The laws should scare the criminals to own a gun illegally, possibly a two year prison term for each illegally owned gun. No one would want to deal with that. There are still thugs out there that wouldn’t care just like they don’t care about today’s gun laws. Most of the time, for the U.S. to realize that a thug owns a gun is to hear that they shot someone or attempted a shooting. The thug should receive harsher penalties in jail for possessing an illegal weapon and if they shot and killed someone, the possession of the illegal gun should further more result to a death penalty.

Bad guys don’t have guns just to protect themselves, they have it to enforce their views, injure, and kill people. Bill Cosby once said in regard to gun control, “When you carry a gun, you mean to harm somebody, kill somebody.” This confirms my idea that gun owners are up to no good when in possession of a gun.

Some pro-gun people may say, “With all these restrictions, how will we be able to hunt and protect our self?” If you are a good person who deserves to own a gun, you can get a gun to keep in your house to protect yourself and go hunting. If you ever committed any domestic violence misdemeanor or any crime worse than that, you should not be allowed to legally own a gun.

No matter what, people will always find a way to harm one another. There will always be criminals, mentally insane people, and bad people who wish to cause harm. These people will always find a way to try to hurt others. Making gun laws stronger would just make it harder for them to cause harm. Even though the United States has had recent heartbreaking mass shootings and gun incidents, they aren’t doing all they can to adjust and make new laws. One day there will be a shooting that wakes up the U.S. regarding today’s gun laws. I just fear that may be my kids, or your kids.
