Childhood cancer is the second leading cause of death in children, the most common type being Leukemia. On average, 1 to 2 children out of 10,000 develop the disease each year.
We began our search for a child over the summer. It is sometimes a long and difficult process to find a child to sponsor, but in the end it was all worth it. That became evident when we found Brody. Brody was diagnosed with B cell Leukemia on January 27th, 2012 at the age of 2. He is currently going through chemotherapy which will continue for the next 3 years. He is the most precious little boy we have ever met.
Special Spaces is a non-profit organization that raises money to re-do the room of a child with a life threatening illness to their liking. Their room is an escape for them and allows them to forget all about the medicine and pain that they have to go through.
So far, we have begun to bond with Brody and his family. We have spent days hanging around their house, getting to know all about Brody. His favorite movie is Cars, so we have decided to base his room around the movie. He has not slept in his room since his diagnosis, and both us, along with his parents believe this project will help him feel comfortable to move out of his parents’ room and into his own again.
Until now, the hardest part about our project is being so far away from our mentor. Special Spaces is located in Tennessee, which means we have never met our mentor face to face. At times, it gets very complicated to work on our goals for the project, but in the end it always works out.
We have been planning different fundraisers and are in the works of setting up a Dine and Donate with Mary’s Pizza. There is no set date yet, but we will send out the word when we have a date if you would like to come a support little Brody. If you would like to donate money or anything you think we would be able to use for his room that would be greatly appreciated.
We are working hard to make little Brody’s Dream Bedroom become a reality.
