What did you do before entering the educational field?
Prior to [the educational field], I was a mom for 13 years.
My daughter started Ursuline and then, of course, I worked for Ursuline for 10 years. Prior to that, I worked in juvenile probation for a few years, and before that I was in the stock broker’s business for about 10 years, and I also managed The Gap, the retail store.
You mentioned your daughter, she went through Ursuline?
My daughter, Amie, went through Ursuline. She graduated in 2006. She just finished college and she is in marketing over at Jackson Family Wines.
What is your favorite part about your job?
Working with all the people at Cardinal Newman, whom I have always liked all these years. I never really had a chance to come down here much and was always so busy up there. Now, it is really enjoyable, even working with Mr. Rosales, the ladies in the office, and Graham [Rutherford], whom I have known since high school. We have known each other for a long time. It is nice being with people you can talk to.
Now did you graduate from Ursuline?
I graduated from Ursuline, my mother graduated from Ursuline, my sisters graduated from Ursuline, my aunts graduated from Ursuline, and my sisters-in-law graduated form Ursuline. All my brothers graduated from Newman, so we have been around a long time.
What are some of the changes you have had to adjust to?
Things are just done differently here. It’s basically like learning a new job. But everyone is very helpful and we take it one step at a time. Here I am considered the Assistant Dean, so there is some discipline I have to do that I didn’t do up at Ursuline. It’s a new role. Everyone called me Bernie. Now, I am the Assistant Dean and known as Mrs. Lane. It is a total change. It is fun and I really like it. Everyone is supportive and I don’t feel alone.
How do you think the changes have affected the Newman community?
I am sure they have had to go through adjustments too, of course, being an all boys school for all these years, then having to accommodate young women. There has to be some ‘let’s figure this out because now there are girls here,’ cause, just like Ursuline was all girls, and to have to take the boys up there, there would be changes we would have to make. Something specific, of course the room, accommodating the students and trying to figure the campus out. I think as far as the classrooms go, there were girls down here anyway, so it may not be too much different. Making the accommodations at one small campus and having more girls is a challenge.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
I am just really happy to be here. I am really enjoying everybody and I am always here for the kids, that’s the main thing.
