Q: Last week was Arts Alive week. Is there any particular medium of art that has always fascinated you?
A: Well, I love painting. I love jazz, classical, all kinds of music. I have kind of eclectic tastes in the arts. I like doing photography myself.

Q: Are you a painter?
A: I’m not a painter, but I love painting. So, I like looking at paintings in museums and posters. I wish I could paint, but I can’t. It’s not for public consumption.

Q: Do you prefer modern painting or more classical painting?
A: I like Byzantine icons. I like the grand masters and impressionists, expressionists, modern artists. If I go to a city, I like to visit a museum and see what kind of art they have there.

Q: If you were going to be working on the set of a film, would you prefer to be a director, a cameraman, an actor or a set designer? And for what reasons?
A: I think I would like to be a director because I have real respect for good directors. It just seems like it would be an incredible challenge to direct a film. You named all those different areas, and as a director, you have to have an understanding of all of them to coordinate them and bring them all together as a whole. I think that would be a fascinating job.

Q: Do you think you use many of the same qualities in your job as a counselor?
A: Well, I definitely think so because part of my job as a counselor is personal and academic counseling, and in a way that is helping coach students to do better. It’s not just one aspect of their lives. You know, the biggest challenge for most people, no matter what age you are is to keep things in balance. You have to be able to look at all the things that are important to you in your life; family life, life with friends, sports, academics. You have to figure out how to keep it in balance. I think it is a little bit like being a director of film. A director is looking to bring out the best and the talents. Whether it is the set designer, cameraman, the actors or whatever, he has to get to know them and what their strengths are, what their talents are and use that in the film. So yeah, that’s kind of what we are doing in counseling is helping students get to know themselves better so we can bring out the best.
