Do you ever wonder why the Moon seems so alone in the night sky? Some people believe it is because the Moon's best friend, the sun, sets during the night, while others believe it is because Earth only has one Moon unlike other planets that have multiple. Although these may be true, they are mainly just myths. The main reason the Moon is so lonely is because she used to have a lover from the spirit world named Quae and they would walk the skies together as they were deeply in love. The relationship they had was the envy of the world, because this type of love doesn’t happen every day. Everyone was so jealous of the love Quae and the Moon had that they wanted them to be seperated. Kajoku, the trickster of the spirit world was especially jealous of Quae and the Moon as he was deeply in love with her as well. Kajoku came up with a well thought out plan to break up the relationship in the hopes of making the moon his own.
Kajoku told Quae that Moon wanted some wild roses from the mortal world but didn't know who to ask. Kajoku told Quae that even though Moon had asked him to retrieve the roses he knew that Quae was in a relationship with her and didn't want to upset him. Although Quae knew that Kajoku was known for being the trickster of the spirit world he would still do anything for her love. With this in mind, Quae took off to the mortal world to retrieve some wild roses for his love, but little did he know that once you leave the spirit world you cannot come back. After Quae finished his journey he attempted traveling back into the spirit world but could not. At this moment Quae realized that Kajoku had tricked him! So Quae reported the trickster to the controller of the spirit world, Lord Roku, and after hearing the bad
news Lord Roku banished Kajoku to the mortal world to live as a rat among the filth, as this is what he resembled. Kajoku was irate with this and blamed Quae for all of it, so he used the last of his powers to punish Quae by turning him into a wolf so that he could be lonely forever as the wolves are the most independent of the creatures that live in the mortal world. Soon after, the Moon heard the news of Quae being trapped in the mortal world as a wolf and out of devastation and a broken heart the moon decided to hide in front of the sun as a solar eclipse so that she could take time to grieve, and now the Moon does this two to four times every year to grieve over her loss.
After a long period of mourning, the Moon realized that she could still see Quae on the mortal world during the night, so she decided to look for him but she could not find him easily in this big world. To get a better look, Moon came closer and closer until she filled the night sky, and when she found him she became whole, as before she was missing a big part of herself and was only a crescent. When Quae saw this he called out to the Moon but all that would come out was a roaring howl. He tried again to call out to his love but all that was heard was a desperate howl. Another wolf heard this and thought of it as a distress call, so the wolf followed the devastated howl until he found Quae on the edge of a cliff with his his head back pointed at the moon howling into the night sky. The wolf asked Quae, “Why are you howling like this?” Quae said “It is because I am lonely in this world.” The wolf was confused by this and so he asked Quae “Why are you lonely?” Quae, contemplating whether he should share his story or not, felt it might be helpful to express his emotions and so he told the wolf of his story. He expanded by
telling him “I am howling to call out to my love, the moon for I am lonely being a wolf in this mortal world.” The wolf felt bad for Quae as deep inside there was a pit in his stomach too, missing the most essential part, a companion; and so the wolf told Quae, “I will be your friend, for I feel what you are missing because I am lonely as well and I understand how much pain that can bring.” Quae was delighted to have someone who understood his pain and had felt what he had gone through, and so together Quae and the wolf stood at the edge of the cliff howling, calling out to the moon, expressing their loneliness and pain. Now all wolves howl every night there is a full moon so that they can empty their pain and sorrow in resemblance of Quae calling out to his love.
After Quae was done howling out everything that he had felt, he realized something odd. Even though the wolf was supposed to be the most independent creature in the mortal world, this new wolf friend of his seemed very lonely and seeking companionship just like himself. With this in mind, Quae decided to set off on a journey to find any other wolves he could as he expected them to feel the same way he and his new friend do. After gathering together a couple more lonely wolves, Quae felt as he belonged and was happy that they had felt the same.
Quae and the wolves had come up with a pact that they would remain a tribe and treat each other as family while looking out for one another like brothers. It is for this reason that to this day wolves travel in packs. Despite this, there was still order that needed to be established so that this pack would not tear each other apart; and so all the wolves voted for an alpha who
would keep the pack in order and look over his brothers with leadership. After much contemplation, all the wolves agreed that Quae would be the new alpha of the pack as he was the one who brought them together and formed their family.
With Quae as the new alpha this pack thrived, teaching us about the importance of family and loyalty to the ones you love. Although Quae still missed his love, he had a new family now of which he had a role to look after them with honor and pride. However Quae still felt a part of himself was missing without the Moon; and so the Moon visits Quae on the mortal world every once in a while to listen to his song to her as he howls out to the night sky, calling to his love, calling to her. |
