PROFILE OF MR. ACEVEDO
BY
HENRY TRIONE

Mr. Acevedo moved with his family from New York to Sonoma County two years ago so that he could take over the music program at Cardinal Newman. He has just been voted "Teacher Of The Year" by the other members of the Cardinal Newman faculty.

Q. How many musical instruments do you play?
A. Guitar is the only instrument that I practice although I also play bass. I took piano      in college. Every music student in college must learn piano.

Q.Tell us about your current musical career as well as some of the things you did      before coming to Cardinal Newman.
A. By the sixth grade, I had decided to devote my life to music. It captivated me. I      am originally from Texas. I went to North Texas State University where I met      other people interested in music. That’s where I became the most fascinated with      jazz music. I met some people from the Berklee college of music in Boston and I      transferred. I blossomed in that school and stayed in Boston for five years playing      professionally. In 1995, my wife and I moved to the Bay Area where I met Cody      Anderson, the former music teacher here. It is also where I fell in love with      teaching. I taught a summer music class at UC Berkeley.

Q. What positive change do you hope to see at Cardinal Newman in the near future? A. The challenge that I face is that scheduling is such that some students that want to      take guitar can’t because the schedule is full. I would like to teach a fourth period      of guitar and maybe a music theory class mostly for students who will pursue      music in college. I would like to find a way to make that work and make Cardinal      Newman better known for it’s music. Enrollment will increase when the school      offers more classes in the arts. In the future, I want to teach my students how to      record and mix their own music.
